There's a new FREE video available from one of my favorite medical/anatomical animation producers Nucleus Medical Art.
Even if you don't care to discuss the herniation aspect, it's a nice animation showing the location and basic structure of an intervertebral disc.

After watching that video, I searched for information on disc anatomy and found this site:

Great, great detail and it gave me an idea for demonstrating the anatomy of the disc with a small balloon filled with water, wrapped in silly putty, and sandwiched between two model vertebrae. VERY effective visual.
